My research interests lie at the intersection of modern Chinese intellectual and literary history, with a particular focus on how China has understood, represented, and repositioned its premodern past in the course of modernization. I am especially interested in the ways historical memory is reconstructed through changing intellectual, cultural, and literary frameworks, and how interpretations of the past participate in broader debates over modernity and cultural identity. In addition, I have a keen interest in traditional Chinese poetry—especially Han-Wei old-style poetry and Song Ci—and I am also an amateur writer of traditional Chinese poetry.
