Aspects of the Chinese Language

Description

This course lays the groundwork for an understanding of how the Chinese language operates. It introduces the fundamental knowledge of Chinese in various topics including the Chinese sound system, Chinese writing system, word formation (i.e., morphology), sentence patterns (i.e., syntax), and socio-cultural aspect of the language. We will examine the unique features of Mandarin Chinese in these aspects and introduce basic linguistic concepts as we move along. You are encouraged to draw on your experience in learning Chinese as well as your knowledge in other languages to complete various tasks. The course will also prepare you for further studies in linguistics and Chinese language-related culture.

Prerequisite: B- or above in CHIN0002 or equivalent.
