Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) scholarship

This grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, assists the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area studies; stimulates the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency. It covers tuition and a $18,000 stipend for the academic year. Only U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Mitsubishi Graduate Fellowship in Japanese Studies

This grant supports the study of Japan by graduate students in the social sciences or humanities at the University of Pittsburgh. It provides tuition, fees, and a $21,000 stipend for the academic year. All students are eligible to apply.

Chinese Studies Tuition Remission Fellowship

This grant covers tuition for all or part of one or two terms of full-time study at the University of Pittsburgh. All students are eligible to apply.

Tuition Reduction Scholarships

A small number of Tuition Reduction Scholarships are offered for out-of-state students accepted into the IDMA program on a competitive basis. All students are eligible to apply. Recipients of this award pay in-state tuition rates (the difference between the in-state and out-of-state tuition rates amounts to $14,028 in AY2020). This Tuition Reduction is valid for only one academic year but may be renewable pending availability and academic performance.

IDMA students are eligible to apply for a variety of scholarships and fellowships administered by the Asian Studies Center. As with most financial aid, these awards are highly competitive.

Teaching assistantships are not available for this interdisciplinary graduate program.
