First Year Chinese
First Year Chinese is offered in two "five-week" sessions
NOTE: There are no scholarships for First Year Chinese.
Learn Chinese and immerse yourself in Chinese culture for 10 weeks this summer!
The Department of East Asian Language and Literature will offer two 5-week intensive Beginning Chinese sessions in 2014. The class will meet 5 days a week. Students will work closely with teachers to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Chinese. You do not have to have prior experience in Chinese to be enrolled in Summer Session I. You can register for both two sessions, which combined is equivalent to one academic year of Chinese at Pitt, or register for one session only (and that is equivalent to one semester’s of Chinese at Pitt). Upon completion of the two sessions, students will learn about 600 Chinese characters.
After Summer Session I, you will be able to talk about simple topics of daily life and to read and write short passages. Upon completion of Summer Session II, you can conduct simple, practical conversations, and to read and write short passages on a variety of everyday topics such as transportation, dining, asking directions, lodging, travel, etc.
High School students take note:
A special session of CHIN 0001 starting on June 23, 2014 and ending on August 2, 2014 will be offered. Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 10:00 am through 2:40 pm.
