World of Korea: Past and Present

This course examines Korea's social and cultural developments over the course of its modern history. In discussing its history and culture that has been lesser known to the outside world than it should be, this course also aims to help the student gain fresh perspectives on broader contexts such as East Asia and the Pacific Rim. This course spans a wide range of time periods: the colonial period (the late eighteenth century) to the present. Yet designed to inspire critical approach rather than just offer a simple overview, it is structured around key historical and sociocultural issues such as colonial modernity, the Korean War, national division, military dictatorship, democracy movements, national culture, gender politics, diaspora, globalization, and hallyu (the Korean Wave). Intended to be comparative and interdisciplinary, this course also draws on various fields and sources such as history, literature, culture, films, and music.
