How do literary works illustrate Japan’s evolving relationship with the West in the modern era? Through poetry, prose, and visual art since 1868, we will reflect on the ways in which Japan has affected and been affected by the West in order to develop a more nuanced understanding of social, aesthetic, and geopolitical issues that inform the importation, re-contextualization, and rewriting of western ideas.  This course is designed for students interested in broadening their knowledge through an understanding of a tradition different from their own, as well as for students who wish to compare literature they have studied with that of Japan.
