Language and Society in Korea

Description

This course will focus on the fundamental knowledge of sociolinguistics, language variations, varieties, and codes and the inherent sociality cultural implements of these descriptions. The class perspective will concentrate on sociolinguistics in regards to the relationship between language use in cross-cultural communication, social meaning and cultural motivations in English within the comparison of how Korean language is used differently from English in regard to those issues. Considering the substantial differences between the Eastern anad Western cultures and societies, students will study variation of languages including the relationship between linguistic behavior and social groups; social classes, the effects of sex/gender, address and reference terms, politeness strategies, and style on language (form) used both in English and Korean languages in a comparative manner. The materials are arranged in order to explain and evaluate the interaction of the language, society and culture, the process of how people use language to construct social meaning and how those processes influence lingusitic structure as well as cross-cultural communication. All reading materials are in English.

Course prerequisites

Students are required to take either Aspects of Language (LING 0080) or Intruduction to Linguistics (LING 1000) as a prerequisite. Students are not required to have any prior Korean language skills, but one or two semesters of Korean is helpful.
